Obedience

  1. “My beloved young sisters, you have the precious gift of agency. I plead with you to choose to obey.” (President Monson, Believe, Obey, and Endure, 2012 April Conference)
  2. “Let us find the joy of serving in the priesthood! We can do this best by applying the principles of knowledge, obedience, and faith.” (President Uchtdorf, The Joy of the Priesthood, 2012 October Conference)
  3. “By obedience to God’s commandments, we can qualify for that “house” spoken of by Jesus when He declared: ‘In my Father’s house are many mansions. … I go to prepare a place for you … that where I am, there ye may be also.’” (President Monson, The Race of Life, 2012 April Conference)
  4. “Obey the laws of God. They are given to us by a loving Heavenly Father. When they are obeyed, our lives will be more fulfilling, less complicated. Our challenges and problems will be easier to bear. We will receive the Lord’s promised blessings.” (President Monson, Believe, Obey, and Endure, Address to the Young Women)
  5. “The leaders who have the most influence are usually those who set hearts afire with devotion to the truth, who make obedience to duty seem the essence of manhood, who transform some ordinary routine occurrence so that it becomes a vista where we see the person we aspire to be.” (President Monson, Examples of Righteousness, 2008 April Conference)
  6. I slept and dreamt / That life was joy. / I awoke and saw / That life was duty. / I acted, and behold -- / Duty was joy. (President Monson quoting Rabindranath Tagore)
  7. “A testimony needs to be kept vital and alive through obedience to the commandments of God and through regular prayer and scripture study.” (President Monson, Priesthood Power, 2011 April Conference)
  8. “The Holy Spirit of Promise, through our obedience and sacrifice, must seal our temple covenants in order to be realized in the world to come.” (President Eyring, Families Under Covenant, 2012 April Conference)
  9. “Obedience to the truth you have received will keep the testimony alive and strengthen it. Obedience to the commandments is part of the nourishment you must provide for your testimony.” (President Eyring, A Living Testimony, 2011 April Conference)
  10. “When we truly understand what it means to love as Jesus Christ loves us...obedience becomes a joy rather than a burden.” (President Uchtdorf, The Love of God, 2009 October Conference)

Why it matters:
Obedience is the first law of heaven. One of our greatest tests in this life is to see if we will be obedient to all the laws and commandments of the gospel. Obedience is learning to submit our own will to that of the Father’s. It is difficult, but obedience and sacrifice bring for the greatest blessings of heaven. I learned a great deal about obedience on my mission, and I continue to cultivate greater obedience to Heavenly Father’s commandments in my present life.
